Bat - A disc or slab on which pottery is made and dried plaster bats can also be used to remove excess water from clay.
Bisque - Clay which has been firing once , but not glazed.
Bisque Fired - Preliminary firing to harden the clay before glazing.
Ceramics - the art of making things in clay and firing to make them permanent.
Coil - A long thin roll of clay used in hand-building.
Pyrometric Cone - pyramid of clay and chemicals formulated to bend at a certain temperature.
Crackle - An even network of lines in glaze , giving it a decorative antique effect.
Craze - Defect in glaze consisting of lines and splits caused by too-heavy glaze application or improper fit between glaze and clay body.
Crawling - Glaze defect which exposes areas of unglazed clay , caused by heavy glaze application , application of glaze to dust or dirty bisque , or uneven contraction rates between glaze and body.
Dry-Foot - Cleaning all the glaze from the bottom of the pottery before it can be fired.
Earthenware - Low-fired pottery , usually red or tan in color.
Fired - To expose clay to very high heat in the kiln to hared it or melt the glaze.
Glaze - creamy liquid form of glass applied to bisque. Firing melts the glaze , forming glass-like coating.
Green ware - pottery that has not been fired.
Kiln - oven in which pottery is fired.
Leather Hard - clay which is dry enough to hold it’s shape , but still has some moisture in it.
