Curriculum Plan
Educational goals
The goal for this web is to teach high school students to confidently use the methods and materials necessary to create works of art in 3-D to the best of their ability.
Description of your learners
The instructional lesson is for tenth through twelfth grade art students. This is an entry-level art course. This lesson was created to meet the need of all students in this class. The students are 15 to 19 years old. Over half of the students in this class have diverse learning disabilities and backgrounds, even though it is considered a general education classroom.
Description of your subject matter
This studio course is the foundation for art study. Emphasis is placed on the development of art skills and knowledge of the elements and principles of art. Self-expression and art exploration are encouraged.
Detailed learning objectives
There are many desired outcomes in terms of changes in the learners’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes from experiencing this group of lessons. Students will be able to sew fabric, make design choices, apply the knowledge of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Students will also have more confidence using art tools and following proper methods and procedures to create art.
Expected prerequisites
This course represents the foundation for basic 3-D art study. Emphasis is placed on the development of art skills and knowledge of the elements and principles of design. Self-expression and art exploration are encouraged but no previous formal art courses are required for students entering this course.
Summary aim
This high school studio art course investigates a variety of three-dimensional sculptural and design techniques. Learners' emphasis is on developing craftsmanship and creativity. Lessons of may include, but are not limited to, functional and non-functional clay ceramics, and representational and non-representational sculpture
Rationale
This studio art course is designed for those students who wish to develop skills for use in leisure time or lifelong hobby activities or wants to begin to learn the basic skills in art necessary to continue on an art career pathway.
Grouping
Students will be grouped differently for various activities although individual expression and development is encouraged; teamwork is also encouraged and embraced.
Learning Activities
Students will review the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design when they enter the class. The students will also learn how to make design decisions for a paper quilt with a Haiku poem, a fabric quilt, and write about detailed creation steps in essay form. All this is in preparation to create a soft sculpture puppet.
Sequence of Activities
1. Review for the 2-D unit will take place in class and will not be part of this web.
2. Design Practice will be attempted first followed by the Haiku exercises.
Then these two elements will be put together for the finished piece.
3. The quilted ornament will then be created.
4. The essay will then be created. Later, the puppet lesson will follow this unit. First the sketch of the puppet is created. Then the clay head, hands, and feet puppet pieces are sculpted. Then the soft sculpture body is sewn together. Finally, all pieces will be hot glued together to finish.
Evaluation
This course is project-based assessment. There is one basic rubric that suits all the projects in this web. There is a separate rubric for the essay. It can be downloaded and turned in for self-assessment. The teacher will go over each assessment sheet with the students. Together, teacher and student will discuss the final grade to be entered.
